Vala Thorodds is a publisher, editor, and poet, as well as a literary translator from Icelandic to English. Her work is published by The Guardian, Granta, BBC Radio 4, The White Review, PN Review, The Stinging Fly, and in the anthologies New Poetries VII and The Penguin Book of the Prose Poem, among others. She is the recipient of an Iowa Arts Fellowship in Literary Translation from the University of Iowa and a PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant. Her work in translation and publishing has been supported by Arts Council England, the Icelandic Literature Center, Reykjavík UNESCO City of Literature, and the City of Reykjavík.

I walk slower
today
than yesterday

I walked slower
yesterday
than the day before

I haven’t looked at the clock in a month
instead I count birds

one and it’s one o’clock
two and it’s two o’clock
three and it’s nón

I’m on my way to becoming a timeless woman

a living room cowboy

There are dolphins in the moat
there are penguins on the telly
the paper has flown off the shelves and the mountains are visible again

not everyone can afford nature
said the money man and polished his watch
and yet everyone turns back into mud

(now there’s a committee for sanitiser)

I connected my head
to the head in the ground
