Nikola Gjelincheski

Nikola Gjelincheski (B.A. in English Language and Literature) is a translator and teacher, born in 1988 in Struga, Macedonia. Since 2010 he has worked as a teacher of English and Spanish in various teaching contexts, with focus on courses for creative writing and drama for children.

He is a member of the Macedonian Association of Translators and Interpreters – MATA and the English Language Teachers' Association of Macedonia – ELTAM. In 2014 he won the BABYLON AWARD- Best Young Translator Award – third place, for the translation from English into Macedonian of parts from "A Dance with Dragons" by George R.R.Martin. The competition is organized by The Delegation of the European Union and MATA Translators' Association. The following year in 2015, he won BABYLON AWARD - Best Young Translator Honorary Mention awarded for "creativity in translation" from English into Macedonian of parts from "Railsea" by China Tom Miéville.

As a translator from English and Spanish into Macedonian and vice versa he has translated several books of poetry among which:

Old dragons pass over,
new stars are born.

The souls levitate
among the sounds of timelessness.
Within our bodies a universe hides
ready to gift light
with life.

Moments of tranquility spilled silently,
the sources fill with new dreams.
New horizons sprout in the mind,

plays with humanity.

We’re flying like doves
in an enclosed train station.

We’re alchemists of love
absorbing a vacuum Truth.
An old man on the meadow high in the mountains
plays the ezgiya[1] of his life.

Are we weeds and dry trees
living in dense fog or are we a thought
which follows the sound of the waves?

Shock-absorbing existence,
life means changing time zones.

Can the lost steps be found
in the transparent emptiness of glasses
or the quiet voices as marks of the world
trace the lines of our whirlwinds?

Летаме како гулаби
во затворена железничка станица.

Алхемичари на љубовта
апсорбираме вакуумска Вистина.
Еден дедо на ливадата високо меѓу планините
ја свири езгијата на својот живот.

Дали сме троскот и суви дрвја
кои живеат во длабока магла или сме мисла
која го следи звукот на брановите.

Because the codes are mixed up,
because a true thought is replaced
with a seemingly important one.

Because we are the generated patriots
of the unwritten history.

That’s why we’re insignificant dust,
a forgotten dying star
- a Mayan wish to be reborn.

Somewhere in the holes of the arteries
we play, warming
- like the clay bricks and the glass wool
in the storage heater.

Anatomy of warmth.

I identify myself in each pore
of the trees,
I search for the centre of my home
in the cracked dry fields.

Then with the clods I make the planetary system,
the universe of the hidden groundwater,

my Cosmos.

MEMORIES FROM A BYGONE AGE / СПОМЕНИ ОД КАМЕНО ДОБА

When we were little
we used to hide in an old car,
in front of a granny’s gate.
I often go through that car.
It’s old, worn out,
with rust all over its body.
I smile
and let good thoughts flow
through me one more time.

I am here,
I also remember climbing
the trees on the street.
Hanuman used to play with us.

I also remember the straight line
we used to draw in the middle of the street,
with chalk nicked from school.
We used to connect my house
and yours.

That way we wouldn’t lose each other,
and, yet,
we did.
The rain erased the line
that we drew at the time.

Како мали
се криевме во еден стар автомобил,
пред портата на една баба.
Поминувам често низ автомобилот.
Стар е, изветвен,
со ’рѓа на каросеријата.
Се насмевнувам
и ги оставам убавите мисли да протечат

Јас сум тука,
се сеќавам и на качувањето
по уличните дрвја.

omnipotent in our visions,

touches burst into flames.

the everlasting message in the kingdom:
we are here so we can be the souls that
we live carefree and in so much splendour.

on the cobblestone street of life, drenched with the colours
of angelic shadow,
we raise our hands towards the stars
and bow to light
wishing a safe flight to eternity.

with your piercing whisper let a palimpsest
be heard and awaken throughout world’s creations.

living is sad and the gaze is low,
our grace is damned.

it’s clear we’re hiding behind our decisions,
behind our voice afraid to rise. we didn’t let
legends sleep, the closets are full
of echos. pouring sounds tear tranquility’s
ferment.

we satiate the hunger to listen with some Turkish delight,
we iron the trousers,
we are the light we’re looking for at the end
of our own tunnel.

it’s simple –

yet there are no such shops…

we’re fragile,
hidden in our own weight,
howling like the wind
while words
stick in our throat.

clouds too are like people,
each one of them carries its own weight.

only silence blows our hats away.

speechlessness will tell stories.

I look for you in the haystack like a needle,
like a frozen meadow
on a melting icy island
where I could put
a polar bear
so it feels safer
a little longer.

I look for you like the reflection in the looking glass
which hides my age
like a bicycle hidden in the attic
so I can ignore
my youth,
I look for you like the neighbour’s knife
that used to puncture our balls,
like the net on the hoop
and the fish trap we used to catch fish
in the river which is now drying up
I look for you like a manila thread
torn off the long-tailed kite
that flew away in the distance
yet we’d go pick it up peacefully
so we could release
another one.

I look for you like the secret crush
in the folly of my childhood,
like the sandpaper we used
to sand the beer bottle caps
so they would slide better on the asphalt
when we played
a round of paths

and I know that you, lost on the path,
are looking for something
and you’d always turn back
to say my name
like a vow and a forgotten ancestral shadow
like a proof that my ludens does exist,
so you can prove that there is no
spring we’ve jumped over that tried to harm us
and that there is no man who’s frightened
our present time
no unborn child who wanted to break

proud of our past
unstable in the present
we tremble before the future
we cut down trees although we know
that a football pitch can’t be built on a hill
where the goalposts can’t be seen

we run uphill with stones in our pockets
the doors and windows don’t creak anymore,
but behind them the same snobs throw us away
like spoiled pickled food, they don’t smell us,
they throw us in the cellar as destroyed,
invalid evidence.

true values, right?

we/they are all managers of the office for
lost reasonable opinions.
one day I’ll take all the flags waving in vain
and I’ll put them in a washing machine.
they all need to be washed – together.
with the same washing powder and the same softener.
because that should be the new freedom!
we float in life like a plastic bag in the wind
in a full-length silent film. the ones who don’t realize it,
even more so.

great people leave, little sweethearts come
- except for the ones found on the shore.

will they achieve greatness or will unease eat them up?
amid crudeness, stupidity and vanity galore
everyone looks for their place under the sun to scream their heart out
about everything weighing down on their soul.

we want to be cherries, yet we’re worms, hidden inside them.
a mandala made of sand left in the storm,
until someone stops breathing

-we’ll keep on destroying ourselves.

горди на минатото
нестабилни во сегашноста
се тресеме на иднината
сечеме дрвја иако знаеме
дека фудбалскиот терен не се гради на рид во кој
головите не се гледаат
трчаме по угорница со камења во џебовите
вратите и прозорците повеќе не крцкаат,
но позади нив истите снобови како расипана зимница
не фрлаат, не нѐ мирисаат,
нѐ расфрлаат во депото како уништени,
невалидни докази.
нели вистински вредности?
сите с(м)е директори на канцеларијата за
изгубени здраворазумни ставови.
еден ден ќе ги соберам сите знамиња кои залудно се веат
и ќе ги ставам во машина за перење.
на сите им треба перење и тоа – заедно.
со ист прашок за перење и ист омекнувач.
оти тоа би требало да биде новата слобода!
лебдиме во животот како пластично ќесе на ветрот
во долгометражен нем филм. оние кои не препознаваат,
уште повеќе.
големите луѓе си одат, мали срценца доаѓаат
– освен оние најдени на брегот.
ќе станат ли и тие големи или јанѕата ќе ги изеде?
во раскошот на грубоста, глупоста, ништожноста,
секој си бара место за да си извика
сѐ она што му тежи на душичката.
сакаме да бидеме цреши, а црви сме, скриени во нив.
мандала сме од песок оставена на бура,
сѐ додека некој не престане да дише
– ќе продолжиме да се уништуваме.
