Isa Hukka is a writer and a bilingual translator. Hukka lives in Helsinki where they were born, although parts of them reside in Pohjois-Pohjanmaa, Copenhagen and Montréal/Tiohti:àke. Hukka translates poetry and does live translation as well. Hukka writes many things from stage poetry to academic texts. Having worked in the field of disability arts and studied Philosophy and Gender Studies, Hukka specializes in crip, queer, and disabled texts, contexts, and understandings. I stepped into the morning, timidly, and it made me explode! It coloured love unexpected and I strode into nothing! Even though I lost myself in the shards of glacier I limped towards the next sentence

I start with a single word, stomach blitz and silence ....... before the performer’s line. I am wearing the laughter of others and it sleeps in my lap. Fights have been intervened, novel tongues started from bruises

But umm now thinking back, how did it even begin,

Astuin arasti aamuun ja se räjäytti minut! Väritti odottamatonta rakkautta ja harpoin

Eyes Watched Closely / Silmät katsoivat tarkasti

I have seen a seal eat a seal,
some body crumble in the dryness of a sauna. I have seen
crabs, a dingo, and creatures, an angel in the attic,
a quiet sentimental song hover in the living room.
I have seen my beloved in the beginning of dating,
get up from the lake, I wish it were my last memory
of everything. I have seen people vanish in thin air,
a bone of one’s own, bloody trails leading up to the sky. I have seen
torture and Thierry Mugler naked, a lace train
a kilometer long. I have seen the birth of a foal, all mucous membrane
and trembling, I have seen a red star.
I was forbidden from watching but I watched closely,
I held an emesis basin in my lap and stared
at a painting on a tile wall, I saw it through a wet veil.
I have seen a raccoon steal a chicken wing,
a burning limo, and a casket at the end of a rainbow.
I have seen everything freeze, wither,
and still I only saw my darling in her Midsummer dress.
I have seen a pregnant person asleep,
by a soccer field holding the bellyball,
an invisible city and a green sky,
something so brutal I got lost in the crowd of sorrow,
a crime at a party and the smile of Glasgow,
I was forbidden from watching but I watched closely,
I only saw a soft lethargist, small eyes of a cat,
black pearls full of empty.
I have seen love exude
from a stranger,
a full eclipse in a glass of beer,
a weary family portrait on the surface of the moon,
an ending quiet and still
surrounded by stunning tall grass.

Olen nähnyt hylkeen syömässä hyljettä,
saunaan rusinaksi sammuneen. Olen nähnyt
rapuja, dingon ja olentoja, enkelin ullakolla,
hiljaista iskelmää leijui olohuoneessa.
Olen nähnyt rakkaani seurustelun alussa,
järvestä nousemassa, olisipa se viimeinen muistoni

A roaring gig, tangled hair tangling
I am part of the mass and I enjoy the sweaty lumps, filthy people.
The one who is being watched, has black eyes in wax
it is skinny, but anyway so sexy in an ugly way
that the whole cold sky glimmers in its eyes
and when it bows there is narrow under the skirt.

I would like to know what goes on in its head, even though I know
it is depressed in reality, I heard,
so very mentally ill, even if obscenely present
and dancing like a countryside creature
and I am jealous in a good way because I am invigorated knowing
that one day I will grow into a similar hurricane,
become an erratic steam engine that weeps but the laughter vibrates anyway.

When the show is over, the field releases dust and there is blood on the asphalt, I leave in solitude to play a slimy fake piano filled with ice water, brown bottles of whiskey floating on freezing slush,

I think: I will still forever be the poet who explains to the backstage magicians how nowadays
it is interesting that freaks like us are purchased for the festival to taste Drake’s candy selection and drink booze, just as some grey old man came to ask where the fuck is the booze named after the main event when it is most needed.

I have a bad stomach ache, might as well be a miscarriage, might as well be the same
bowel cancer that my mom had when she was young, but I keep sitting still in solitude
and it is July, and I am incredibly inspired because the others are just so damn good,
and I am very relieved that I pulled off my gig.

Räyhäkäs keikka, hiukset takussa takku
olen osana massaa ja nautin hikisistä möykyistä, likaisista ihmisistä.

Patty’s forgetfulness makes it invincible. It is nimble, fluffy, and
has star potential. It carves luxurious balloons out of wood and glassblows hanging
water jugs. Its hairy eyes dance and its forgetful mouth is always humming
an embarrassing song. We go to the pharmacy on Tuesdays, together we are safe. It is
fresh like a newly bursted chestnut, and when it laughs the whole house becomes filled with
sweets. It is wearing a multicoloured polo, worn out t-shirt, and black chill pants that
can be borrowed anytime. So I guess it don’t matter, credibility is having
no credibility it says, and stumbles over the threshold into my arms.

Ricci owns an enormous renaissance dump where weed is smoked and shooter games are played
on the big screen. There is an aroid reaching the ceiling and crusty mattresses
one can tumble on. Old Ricci cooks food with wine in it. Its tattooed mustache
brushes to the rhythm of the music. It is wearing a portobello fedora with a thick chin strap.
Its ruby stone upper lip tells cold languishing tales. The lower lip trembles
gut-wrenching grief. It rips off pieces of itself like the green wings of a steamed
artichoke. It is three in the morning. I call the place Hotel
California because when you are there you definitely are not here.

Arma full of drama–head in the clouds, soul on fire, getting its hands dirty. It is
a whimsical hairdresser, and when brainstorming with it the whole map starts dancing.
Its crystal eyes light up the polar night as we tramp towards a bland blast (or well
Arma actually always floats just above ground) and when the door
opens, people turn around. We do not fit inside. As long as it doesn’t get worse, it doesn’t
matter to me. Arma sulks, gushes – is completely from another planet.
Without it, the whole earth would be muted. It has hair and a hat, both behind pointy
ears, shine on the cheeks and bleeding lips – unnervingly firm
grip and it smiles at everybody, both the good and the bad guys.

Lips lined by the tattoo, Rauni, hair like dry grass.

Pattyn hajamielisyys tekee siitä voittamattoman. Se on vikkelä, pörröinen ja

Riccillä on valtava renessanssiläävä jossa poltetaan ruohoa ja pelataan asepelejä
valkokankaalta. Siellä on kattoon asti kurkottava vehka ja rapeita patjoja joihin
voi kapsahtaa. Vanha Ricci kokkaa ruokaa jossa on viiniä. Sen tatuoidut viikset
sutii musiikkiin. Sillä on päässään portobello-fedora jossa on paksu kaulanyöri.
Sen rubiini ylähuuli puhuu näännyttävän kylmiä tarinoita. Alahuuli vapisee
surua, joka saa rinnassa jysähtämään. Se repii itsestään paloja kuin höyrytetyn
artisokan vihreitä siipiä. Kello on kolme aamulla. Kutsun paikkaa Hotel
Californiaksi, koska kun on siellä ei todellakaan ole täällä.

Dramaattinen Arma – pää pilvissä, sielu tulessa ja kädet sorvissa. Se on
iloisenkuriton kampaaja ja kun sen kanssa ideoi niin koko kartta alkaa tanssia.
Sen kristallisilmät valaisee marraksen kun tarvotaan kohti vaisuja juhlia (tai
Arma oikeastaan leijuu aina vähän maan pinnan ylä- puolella) ja kun ovet
aukenee, ihmiset käännähtää. Emme mahdu sisälle. Kunhan se ei pahene, se ei
haittaa minua. Arma mököttää, hersyy – on kaikin puolin toiselta planeetalta.
Ilman sitä koko maa olisi hiljaa. Sillä on hattu ja hiukset, molemmat suippojen
korvien takana, kiiltoa poskissa ja verille purrut huulet – hermostuttavan luja
ote ja se hymyilee kaikille, niin hyviksille kuin pahiksillekin.

Our cry drained like the stench trap drains.
At last we found our own animal, the kind
that gets under our desensitized skin.
The innocent ass with a silky muzzle… gunk in the eyebullets.
We revived and ran back into the meadow! Hee-HAW!

Volatile Displays / Väkivaltaisia esityksiä

1. The Script. A stack soaked and mangled by pencils, filled with scraps of poems. Tailgates you
for a year like a snow-coated vulture, red incisions and drops of correction.

2. The Pet. I accidentally let my neighbour’s dog (Rilke) free. It snuck out the doorway
while I was on my way to the courtyard to see if the huskies were sleeping on their mattresses. Scurrying on stage. Cats and huskies were slumbering, but this fifth hairy coat… it slipped into the snowbank and freedom. For a while I called its name in the yard, all my childhood dogs showed up, the old, the deceased, all brown and coarse but none of them the one that ran away.

3. The Moon. Its skin dry and gray, looking at the earth with its holes. Missing the hot hangout of the planets, how they would all overlap and all life would be eradicated. Something else would begin, for another space.

4. The Drink. The martini of a pornstar in the triangular cocktail glass. Strawberry flavor, body hair, and crushed ice heart at the bottom. It is freezing. When trying to slurp, the tongue gets stuck.

5. The Plants. I know how to keep the plants alive, I got it from my mom. You can’t do anything to them. They want to live in peace. In the summer, they want to go outside, run wild like we
all do, the dry indoors air harms them. They wanna drink loads at once, so that someone
has to keep an eye on the saucer. Then they don’t drink for a while, until. They dream of
the distant steppes their anstumpsters come from and are scared of their memories of the plant factories.

6. The Peer Pressure. The clown friends are hosting their spontaneous show in war, peace, birthday parties, opening nights, sleepovers, hospitals, summer cottages. Even though it all falls apart, even though everybody struggles, even though nobody has time for anything, the friends stage their best concert like it’s the last time.

7. The Hands. Hands that have seen multiple lives, shaking, with and without nails, with and without wounds, in gloves, in the sex, rash, lulling and waving in the air, hands scratching and tearing,
moisturized and grabbing each other. In iron and gauntlets, in the mold of the gold, hands
making a sculpture, mean and cautiously confident.

1. Kässäri. Vettynyt ja kynillä raadeltu nippu täynnä runojen repaleita. Roikkuu vuoden
perässä kuin lumiturkkinen haaska, punaisia viiltoja ja korjauksien pisaroita.

2. Lemmikki. Päästin vahingossa naapurin koiran (Rilken) vapaaksi. Se sujahti oviaukosta
kun olin menossa katsomaan nukkuvatko huskyt sisäpihalla niiden patjoilla. Vipellystä
näyttämöllä. Kissat ja huskyt nukkuivat, mutta tämä viides karvatakki... sujahti kinoksiin ja
vapauteen. Huutelin sitä aikani pihalla, vastaan tuli lapsuuden kaikki koirat, vanhenneet,
menehtyneet, kaikki ruskeita ja karheita mutta ei yksikään ollut se joka pakeni.

3. Kuu. Katsoo rei’illään maata kuiva iho harmaana. Se kaipaa kuumaa planeettojen
hengausta, kuinka ne menisivät päällekkäin ja kaikki elämä kuolisi. Muu alkaisi, jollekin
toiselle avaruudelle.

4. Drinkki. Pornotähden martini kolmiolasissa. Mansikka-aromia, ihokarvoja ja pohjalle
murskattua jäistä sydäntä. On pakkasta. Kun yrittää ryystää, kieli jäätyy kiinni.

5. Kasvit. Tiedän kuinka pitää kasvit hengissä, äidiltä sen opin. Niille ei saa tehdä mitään.
Ne haluavat elää rauhassa keskenään. Kesällä ne haluaa ulos riehumaan niin kuin me
kaikki, kuiva huoneilma on pahaksi. Ne tahtoo juoda runsaasti kerralla, niin että jonkun
pitää vartioida aluslautasta. Sitten ne on pitkään juomatta, kunnes. Ne haaveilevat
kaukaisista aroista joilta niiden esikannot ovat kotoisin ja pelkäävät muistojaan
kasvitehtaissa.
