   Half-finished glasses of wine support last night’s celebration.

   “To the future! —” you cry, raising your glass and nodding to the window;

   But it frames, with its squares, ellipses of muteness and space.

   X-rays cannot show, for whatever long, irritating reason,

   Why a soul stands on end. If you’re smart, you will guess this.

    

   And what does it need? Why can it not stay still in windows or blankets?

   And why does it hide a boatman’s oars at rest in fog?

   The prospects fly off the eyes like a hungry bird from opening hands …

   And tomorrow will hold neither silence, nor Kafka, nor bird, any longer …

   Уже поспіль кілька років. Можеш вгадати - розумна ж - ти.
   
   Що їй треба? що їй легко у шибках і ковдрах не сидиться?
   Що вона чужі сушені весла складає в туман?
   Перспектива злітає з очей, як із рук зголодніла птиця...
   Так що завтра, і тиші, і кафки, і птиці нема...

   Strew a few more grains of sand upon the desert’s heft,

   bid a few more sunbeams to clarify what’s already clear,

   and how fares your Palestine? When will it let you go?

   How fares the heart within you, among strangers?

   I muddle up words in the confusion of languages, spend

   evenings reading that God’s love is meted out between 

   Abraham’s children. Spring rolls out on a gift-laden camel; 

   greenest of all, the binding and contents of your Koran —

   a peculiar, truly peculiar book devised by an ancient

   poet. A book that conveys the poet’s regrets

   and dreams, his questions, his moments of humor;

   but, as it too often happens, his book is misread.

   кілька промінчиків до й так ясного

   What will remain of you? Withered leaves? A few skins

   Sloughed like a viper’s? Brittle stalks of wormwood?

   Ambrosia from ragweed? Greek gods had a taste for ragweed,

   But a god’s meat is a woman’s poison, and we are not gods.

   Ragweed means hayfever (using surgical masks as chadors),

   And dead leaves clamor loudly these nights of delirium.

   What will become of me? You took everything away with you,

   In a puerile parody of Carla stealing Clara’s coral.

   So, what will become of us all? Symbols, memories, lies?—

   the Savior’s Cross, Van Gogh’s sunflowers, Hugo’s Quasimodo,

   and the bones of all those cast out by God into the world,

   onto the Earth, under these skies, and into this odyssey?

                                 від ван гога – соняхи 

                                                                       від гюго – квазімодо

   і від світу кістки усіх кого Бог загнав 

   на цю землю під це небо у цю пригоду

   The wind shifts direction yet blows.

   Rain is not so abundant, but is dripping.

   The old dog recognizes nothing but me,

   Heeding only the scent of my Zodiac.

   How many feet have never trampled here? —

   Because maps are confused by the absence of Wi-Fi.

   The wind shifts in force — and the road is why.

   Owing to all this it is difficult to search for you.

   Your insufficient patience won’t allow you to return 

   To the dust of your native soil, which sharpens

   Your every desire. (And I lack the strength

   To look that old hound in the eye.)

   Silence. The cranes do not bugle. This quiet aches beyond the hours.

   Pain is bitter and grits its teeth, running you over like a Kamaz truck.

   Death means becoming less than one person,

   Irrevocably. Abruptly.

   You are baptized: you have courage. Meanwhile, a meaningless sports

   Broadcast announces a change in the football schedule.

   Death may happen to others, but still he approaches:

   He comes to remind you

   To open your hand. To wave at conversations melting

   Where the yellow leaves rain. Wind is a painter as you are,

   But suddenly alone, you yourself become less than a person,

   Adding nothing to anyone else.

   біль буде як біль. стисне зуби. проїде по тобі мов камаз 

   смерть – це коли тебе стає менше на одну людину 

   безповоротно. нараз.

   у відрізку хрестився/мужнів…до …футбольна трансляція кличе 

   коли тільки спортивний розклад говорить: змінилися дати 

   смерть – це про те що стається з іншими. але ближче 

   підходить до тебе нагадати 

   розтиснеш руку. махнеш розмовам розталим

   але на одну людину тебе вже менше стало 

   й ніким іншим не додаси

   Hello! I know this well: summer has come. Henceforth,

   Boldly approach the sun

   And pray to him. To the shadows. To whomever you wish,

   Wherever you look —

   Once Cain, once Abel, but here there are

   No miracles.

   The journey beguiles your eyes,

   The burro munches his carrot

   And only one road remains.

   I holler and shout — but the shifting sands resound

   And when we walk beside you, we will unearth the Holy God,

   “Cuckoo” escapes your lips, the first word uttered by Adam.

   The golden fall packs the horizon 

   Like a tin storing sprats; we stay up late 

   (And judging the stretch of our legs, we ourselves have longitude).

   I read the newspaper for every Zodiac sign,

   Finding mostly no difference on weekdays. 

   Easier to ask the stars themselves; instantly, their laughter

   Will fill this room and those of my nearby neighbors.

   And how is my desert? Has the sand dried out at last?—

   Clawing into the ground should not be rocket-science.

   Here, jamming my satellite link-ups to you, pigeons

   Wing into the sky like prayers offered to God.

   вчепитись у землю – його перспектива нехитра 

   тут. перекривши усякий з тобою зв'язок

    Plastic grasshoppers.
