Efe Duyan

His translation work into Turkish includes poetry collections of Radu Vancu (Romania), Matthias Göritz (Germany), Lloyd Schwartz (USA), Athena Farrokhzad (Sweden), Mischa Andriessen (Netherlands), Dieter Graef (Germany), Madara Gruntmane, Semyon Khanin, and Sergej Timofevs, Inga Gaile, Guntars Godinš, Arvis Viguls (Latvia), plus selected poems for workshops and festivals by various European poets.

He has been invited to several workshops, poetry readings and international organizations since 2009. He gave guest lectures on poetry at Ca-Foscari University, Georgia State University, George Washington University, affiliated to Boston Massachusetts University , Iowa University, and Washington University in St. Louis as a short-term scholar.

Some of his poems have been translated into Bosnian, Czech, Chinese, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, French, Greek, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Kurdish, Latvian, Lithuanian, Rumanian, Macedonian, Maltese, Occitan, Polish, Slovenian, Slovakian, Spanish, Swedish, Ukrainian and Welsh.

He co-created poetry workshops with British, French, Italian, Israeli, Bulgarian, German, Swedish, Dutch, Japanese, Hungarian poets and the Istanbul Offline International Poetry Festival, Turkish American Poetry Days and Gaziantep International Poetry Festival. He acts as the Turkish co-editor of Rotterdam Poetry Foundation’s Poetry International Archives and advisor to Nâzım Hikmet Poetry Festival in North Carolina.

He has been included in the anthology of Turkish Poetry PAPER SHIP (Great Britain, 2013), European Poetry Anthology GRAND TOUR (Germany, 2019), and EUROPOESIE – 21st Century Poetry Anthology (Great Britain, 2019).

His poetry collections are İki Kalp Atışı Arasında Sessizlik (Silence Between Two Heartbeats, 2023), Sıkça Sorulan Sorular (Frequently Asked Questions, 2016), Tek Şiirlik Aşklar (One Poem Stands, 2012) and Takas (Swap, 2006). His critical fantasy novel on empathy, Başka (Other), was published in 2022.

His selected poems appeared in Chinese in Taiwan in 2021 (Poetry on the Street) and in English in USA (The Behavior of Words in 2023, published by White Pine Press, and in Spanish in Mexico (The Statue Inside the Rock, published by Circulo De Poesia).

He works as Associate Prof. Dr. at the Faculty of Architecture and Design at RISEBA in Riga.

We stand in front of a house on the island,
a cracked mirror on the wall,
probably a wedding gift.
Stairs lead us to the sea.

Undoing the fishing knot that refuses to come loose – an ordinary
sleight of hand for him – a cigarette between his lips
İn a moment, as if smiling, he will cut bait, pieces of dead octopus,
with his pocket knife.
He asks, what’s the time? and I say, three-thirty.
I keep an eye on the hundreds of needles fastened around his basket.
How come they don’t get tangled? I ask.
Like the octopus, he doesn’t talk.

A little while ago a wedding procession went by with towels in their hands.
I was on the mountatin at the slope of the house, all weeds, with yellowing faces, ready to ignite.
Far off, barely heard bells and the smell of sheep approaching.
I came across a short shepherd
with a gun hanging across his waist
inherited from his grandfather.
In his pocket, a flashlight to shine the moon.
Hello, I said. Animals heard your voice, he said.
Sure enough, sheep had changed course. I threw the stone I was holding on the ground.

Captain Mustafa lives on a sailboat with Tekir -the only cat on the island.
We eat what the sea gives, he says, and yesterday’s bread sprinkled with water.
He acts surprised, cutting his cat a piece of dried scorpion fish,
as if he had seen himself on fish’s face.

We placed the pina’s on the mouth of the cold water well. Recep brother digs these fan mussels from the depths of the sea. He is a part of the sea now. His son Marko comes, mutters something
in Greek. He lifts a blackened knife to shuck the shells.
A small grass snake disappears into the bushes.

Voices of exhausted grasshoppers-
The early island lights go on
against the town’s flickering images, bats possess the sky now.
a broken tractor abandoned under the cypress tree
dried peaches nobody picked up
a donkey braying under the sun
everything’s yearning for the sea.

Süleyman brother says that God gave us the life of an eagle. When I look into his eyes,
I see the shore where, in summer, scorpions descend
as night settles in and fishermen seek refuge when a storm breaks in winter.
