The dweller of the plains looks far, God
is remote, perhaps he is living where
the sun rises, is perhaps rooting where
evening falls and disappears, believing
there is a place where ancestors are resting
those who never leave you alone, all this
space must have a sense, a deep meaning,
mystical or religious, spiritual, a precedent
to justify the idea of a life in the aftermath?
Or is it all just a will-o'-the-wisp? The
lowland dweller always is waiting for
a noise, a sudden, something that raises
your head, suggesting to look down
to lengthen your pace or to stop, like
a nail in the fat soil. That farmhouse,
the road, the riverside, the bicycle and
the old lady who despite her venerable age
still defies the frost and the classic pace
of winter, she is praying the yellow of
dandelion flowers in the grass, and she kneels
roughly on the steps of the ruined church
dedicated to San Biagio, patron saint
of shepherds, of peasants like her, protector
of throats. We are in the footsteps, she
whispers, in the expectations, so giant
