I saw a dove fly by
out of the corner of my eye
It seemed to walk
between my eyelashes
It was dark like them
and it started pecking
I don’t know
perhaps at other images
that had happened before
and were now its food
This must be something
halfway between fantasy
and straightforward information
from the senses, I thought
Who can trust the senses, I thought
when there is fantasy
We used to go to the cemetery
me and my love
It was a cemetery in the sea
there was a black bird
about the size
of a baby’s fist
Over the twisted arm
of an iron cross
there was a maiden
that wanted to lift
her face under the veil
but the veil
must have been very heavy
and she could not do it
Look over there, my love said to me
look at that
The floury light fell
from the mountains
then down to the water
where it became living plasma
that seeped in
Who can trust the body
when we also have
fantasy
I am fearful of my body, I said to my love
while I touched the sea graves
with my fingers
Because it rots, I continued
unlike the soul
that does not
because they are opposites
Opposite things do not exist, he said
there is only contiguity, he said
it is our mind that sees things
that are merely side by side as opposites
We sat on the ledge
and then
we saw the black bird
blending into the rock
or crashing into the rock
I do not know
Perhaps the affairs of the body
are the only proof we have
of the affairs of the soul
and we must learn from them
perhaps
we must contemplate all as a mystery
but perhaps that mystery
is here all the time
in the smallest details
The masts swung like spirits
Perhaps the wind is a spirit
that passes through the eye
and slides between our eyelashes
pecking at the spaces in between
while it speaks to us of death
with words we cannot understand
though we feel them in our body
but we cannot understand them
because perhaps we have forgotten
everything about death
and we only remember it
when facing death itself
or when we are gravely ill
or at childbirth or sometimes
when period pains are very bad
and large solid droplets fall
on the soft tufts of the wind
that slide like living plasma
through the black grass
of our eyelashes
Vi pasar una paloma
por el rabillo del ojo
Me pareció que caminaba
por entre mis pestañas
Era oscura como ellas
y se puso a picotear
no sé
y no podía
Mira allá, dijo mi amor
mira a eso
La luz bajaba harinosa
por las montañas
y luego en el agua
se hacía un plasma vivo
que colaba
Quién puede confiar en el cuerpo
teniendo por otro lado
la fantasía
A mí me da miedo el cuerpo, dije a mi amor
mientras pasaba los dedos
por las tumbas marinas
Es porque se pudre, continué
no como el alma
que no
por ser contrarios
No existen las cosas contrarias, dijo él
sólo la contigüidad, dijo él
es nuestra mente que ve contrario
lo que simplemente está al lado
Sentamos a la cornisa
e luego
vimos al pájaro negro
que fundía con la piedra
o se estrellaba
no lo sé
Quizás las cosas del cuerpo
sean la única prueba
de las cosas del alma
y debamos aprender de ellas
quizás
hay que verlo todo desde el misterio
pero quizás ese misterio
está aquí a cada momento
en los detalles más nimios
Los mástiles se balanceaban como espíritus
Será el viento un espíritu
que pasa por el ojo
y se nos mete entre las pestañas
y picotea los espacios entremedias
y nos dice cosas de la muerte
que no sabemos entender
aunque las sentimos por el cuerpo
pero no las sabemos entender
porque acaso se nos ha olvidado
todo lo de la muerte
y sólo lo acordamos
en la mera muerte
o en la enfermedad muy grave
o en un parto o a veces
cuando duele mucho la regla
y gotea en cuajarones macizos
por las masas blandas del viento
que se deslizan como plasma vivo
entre la hierba negra
de nuestras pestañas
