You fall into the world
That's how Liv Ea's poetry collection lys bliver til løv / light turns into leaves opens, and from here, we dive into the unique Easque poetic world of Nature in its every facet; dirt, tree trunks, flamboyant golden insects, cool waters, and a micro-macrocosmos of natural phenomenons, closely tied to the human condition.
Ea's poetry can at first glance seem like simple poems of love of nature, but they always harbour a deep undercurrent; something is moving just out of sight, something is moving just below you, as you swim in beautiful Nordic waters at sunset...
we are animals
in seawater
quietly roaming around
under the surface
of wide open spaces
Liv Ea (b.1999) is an alumni from Forfatterskolen for børnelitteratur (Academy of Childrens Literature), and is an avid writer of both prose and poetry, and a member of the collective of artists Poesiens Hold at Poesiens Hus, that holds an array of poetry workshops. Her poetic debut collection is lys bliver til løv/light turns into leaves (Herman & Frudit 2021), followed by små sten under huden/small stones under the skin (Herman & Frudit 2023).
Liv Ea is immersed in a deep fascination with Nature, as well as a strong determination to protect it, and Ea's working and writing methods always include a strong focus on sustainability and ecological processes.
here the trees stand
gentle and mighty
like seaweed forests
Ea's poetry is not only a nature-beautifying exercise, but an urgent act of will to show us everything within the natural well, and connect it to us as humans.
The desensitivity that has perhaps risen as humans have removes ourselves from Nature, and yes, often trashed it, is challenged in Ea's poetry.
However we might try, we can never disconnect with Nature – we are Nature.
Thrashing it, is trashing ourselves.
Through luminous poetic journeys through both Light turns into Leaves, as well as small stones under the skin, Ea creates an imagery laden with Nature's beauty and cruelty – and shows us how connected we as humans truly are to all of it:
hiding
underneath faltering bones
new roots shoot
'Liv Ea writes herself straight into the urgency of climate poetry with a playful approach to poetry, and a heartfelt fascination with Nature. Every word has been cut out of Danmarks Naturfredningsforening (Danish Naturepreservation Society)'s members' magazines, and have been put together on the page to a personal nature-poetry, teeming with wild and wonderous imagery. It is as if the poetry has been flowing from Liv Ea's fingers in a natural stream'.
Herman & Frudit
”Light and delicate poems, that through a poetry-laden language senses Nature's circular life, and can almost be read as the story of Creation itself.”
