Lena Kallergi

Lena Kallergi is a poet, linguist and translator who lives and works in Athens, Greece. She holds a PhD in Linguistics from Lancaster University, UK and an International Diploma in Translation (Level 7 DipTrans) from the Chartered Institute of Linguists, UK. She is fluent in Greek, English, Italian, French, and Spanish.

She wrote the poetry books Ανήμερο/Untamed (Ikaros, 2023 - “Anagnostis” Poetry Award), Περισσεύει ένα πλοίο/A ship to spare (First edition: Gavrielides, 2016, Second Edition: Μonocle, 2023 - Poets’ Circle Award) and Κήποι στην άμμο/Gardens on sand (Gavrielides, 2010 - “Maria Polydouri” award for New Poets). She took part in the collective, experimental poetry books Poetry Team (Gavrielides, 2010) and Poetry Team II: In Defence of Dreaming (Gavrielides, 2012). Her poems, short stories, essays and translations can be found in literary magazines and anthologies in Greece and other countries. She has participated in numerous international poetry festivals and literary residences. Parts of her work have been translated into English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Croatian, Slovenian, Albanian, Finnish, and Turkish. Her latest book, Ανήμερο/Untamed, was translated and published in France (Ανήμερο/Fauve, Éditions Desmos, 2024, transl. by Laurence Campet).

She has translated, among others, a volume of poetry by Giacomo Leopardi (Η νύχτα απομένει/Night Remains, Gavrielides, 2013), and an anthology of poetry by English Romantic poets, with extended selections by John Keats, William Wordsworth, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge (Kedros, 2021). She has also translated contemporary British and American poets into Greek (Ahren Warner, Ravi Shankar, Troy Jollimore, Heather Alfeld, Tim Tomlinson, and others) and contemporary Greek poets into English (Thanos Gogos, Popi Aroniada, Christos Koltsidas, Akis Parafelas, Vassileia Oikonomou, and others).

Salt / Το αλάτι

All arrive at the sea
with great purpose.

Exhausted, they seek cool water
to fill their dry bursae,
plunging into the sea,
ignorant of osmosis.

Those on fire rush to extinguish the passions.
Muddled as they are
with their wounds open
they wonder why they howl and burn.

Some pull relentlessly on the oars,
singing their sea chanteys.
But before they subdue their first tempest,
their hands become wood.

Others simply want to escape
and bury their pain in deep silence
like a final breath on the sea floor,
forgetting how hard it is to sink.

If only the water was pure blue,
Pure liquid, so wishes could be quenched.
It is not fish that shape the sea,
nor is it words that make language.

Όλοι έρχονται στη θάλασσα
με στέρεες προθέσεις.

Κουρασμένοι, ζητούν υγρασία
να γεμίσουν δροσιά τους στεγνούς θύλακές τους
και βουτούν
αγνοώντας την ώσμωση.

Οι φλεγόμενοι ορμούν για να σβήσουν τα πάθη.
Θολωμένοι όπως είναι, με ανοιχτές τις πληγές τους
απορούν
γιατί ουρλιάζουν και καίγονται.

Κάποιοι τραβούν διαρκώς κουπί
και τραγουδούν θαλασσινά τραγούδια.

Ας ήταν το νερό σκέτο γαλάζιο
σκέτο υγρό, να ξεδιψούν οι επιθυμίες.
Δεν κάνουν τα ψάρια τη θάλασσα
ούτε οι λέξεις τη γλώσσα.
The Origin of a Species / Η καταγωγή ενός είδους

I know nothing about ships.

When I see one pass by under the sun
something deeply nocturnal moves through me
a knowledge of small, closed spaces,
of the darkness of the sea.

And when they approach, lit up in the night
above the black masses of water,
they are light festivities, fragments of foreign worlds
I follow for a while with my gaze.

I too was once in the wooden belly of the first ship
with the other creatures,
as one story goes.
But I didn’t find salvation;
only travellers with a thousand myths,
a language in continuous metaphor.

I don’t know how a hull is designed,
how it was first named, how they heave it in the water.
And if I were chosen to live,
no one taught me navigation.

It’s time I make a vessel of my own.

Δεν ξέρω τίποτε από πλοία.

Όταν τα βλέπω να περνούν κάτω απ’ τον ήλιο
κάτι βαθιά νυχτερινό με διαπερνά
μια γνώση από κλειστή καμπίνα
απ’ το σκοτάδι της θάλασσας.

Κι όταν πλησιάζουν μες στη νύχτα φωτισμένα
πάνω στους μαύρους όγκους του νερού
γίνονται ανάλαφρες γιορτές, θραύσματα ξένων κόσμων
που ακολουθώ για λίγο με το βλέμμα.

Ήμουν κι εγώ στην ξύλινη κοιλιά του πρώτου πλοίου
μαζί με τ’ άλλα ζωντανά,
έτσι λέει μια ιστορία.
Όμως δεν βρήκα σωτηρία ν’ αναπαράγω
μόνο ταξιδευτές με χίλιους μύθους
μια γλώσσα σε διαρκή μεταφορά.

Δεν ξέρω ένα σκαρί πώς το σχεδιάζουν
πώς το ονομάζουν, πώς το ρίχνουν στο νερό.
Κι αν επιλέχθηκα να ζήσω
δεν μου έμαθε κανείς ναυσιπλοΐα.

Καιρός να φτιάξω ένα πλωτό δικό μου.
Ούτε από μένα ξέρω.
The child adrift / Βαθύ παιδικό

Once, the most fearful things in the world for you
were the curtain and the wardrobe.

Night fell in the little room
and you began to tremble
near the dark wood, the thick cloth,
patterns of a domesticated savagery
that agonized as it aged: when you grow up,
the shadows too will just increase.

Then, the point of view shifts.
The windows grow small
along with your old clothes.
The wardrobe itself starts to get short
and slender, with its own children and sisters,
no more frightening than a family,
and the curtain takes on a theatrical role
for your nighttime performances.

You change fears and houses.
Certain darknesses fade, others suddenly deepen.
Hidden courtyards appear,
games you forgot turn up again
in a drawer and show you the way.

You are always sensitive to shadows
and prone to the night.
But you know well how to handle wood
and thickly woven cloth.

If you plunge into memories
and are drenched in sobbing,
you use them for kindling.
If you want to depart,
you can use them to build your raft.

Κάποτε
τα πιο τρομερά πράγματα στον κόσμο
ήταν η κουρτίνα και η ντουλάπα.

Έπεφτε η νύχτα στο μικρό δωμάτιο
κι άρχιζες να τρέμεις
δίπλα στα σκούρα ξύλα, στην πυκνή ύφανση,
σχέδια μιας εποχής οικόσιτα άγριας
που αγωνιούσε πως αν μεγαλώσει
απλώς θα μεγαλώσουν και οι σκιές.

Κάποτε αλλάζει η οπτική γωνία.
Μικραίνουν τα παράθυρα
μαζί με τα παλιά σου ρούχα.
Η ντουλάπα η ίδια αρχίζει να κονταίνει
να λεπταίνει, να έχει παιδιά κι αδελφές
καθόλου πιο τρομακτικές από μια οικογένεια
ενώ η κουρτίνα γίνεται αυλαία
για τις νυχτερινές σου παραστάσεις.

Αλλάζεις φόβους και σπίτια.
Κάποια σκοτάδια χάνονται, άλλα βαθαίνουν απότομα.
Κρυμμένες αυλές φανερώνονται
παιχνίδια που ξέχασες βρίσκονται πάλι
στα συρτάρια σου και σου δείχνουν τον δρόμο.

Είσαι πάντοτε ευαίσθητη με τις σκιές
και επιρρεπής στη νύχτα.
Ξέρεις όμως καλά να χειρίζεσαι ξύλα
και χοντρά υφασμένα πανιά.
Αν βουτήξεις στη μνήμη και βραχείς στους λυγμούς της
τα κάνεις προσάναμμα.
Αν θελήσεις να φύγεις,
υλικά για σχεδία.
Choosing Friends / Διαλέγοντας φίλους

Amid the flowering trees and the waves
on white-washed roads, Death and I walked:
alongside him, thorns were refreshed,
cicadas of noon fell silent.
Taking a short-cut by rocks with moray eels,
we laughed at their pointed teeth.
We watched fish jump out of the water.

He gave me a black dress.
I gave him my photograph
so he could look at me.
I told him to stay at my side,
to hold me in this world.
For ages now bones have caused him pain,
the rough ascents, ashes, lamentations.
He carries the weight of his omnipotence,
the weight of being ignored.

Along the cliff, we walked together,
I in his hand, he in mine.
I don’t imagine finding another companion
as faithful as him.
I don’t want those who leave before the end,
nor those who rest in peace.

Μες στ’ ανθισμένα δέντρα και στα κύματα
σε ασβεστωμένους δρόμους, περπατήσαμε.
Δίπλα στον θάνατο δροσίστηκαν τ’ αγκάθια
σώπασαν τα τζιτζίκια του μεσημεριού.
Κόψαμε δρόμο από τον βράχο με τις σμέρνες
γελώντας με τα μυτερά τους δόντια,
μετρήσαμε τα ψάρια που πετούν.

Μου χάρισε ένα μαύρο φόρεμα.
Tου έδωσα μια φωτογραφία μου
να με βλέπει.
Του είπα να μείνει πλάι μου
να με κρατά στον κόσμο.
Αιώνες τώρα τον πονούν τα κόκαλα
οι τραχιές ανηφόρες, οι στάχτες, οι θρήνοι.
Νιώθει βαρύς γιατί είναι πανταχού παρών
και πάντα αγνοημένος.

Με ασφάλεια, δίπλα στον γκρεμό, βαδίσαμε μαζί,
εγώ στο χέρι του, εκείνος στο δικό μου.
Άλλον συνοδοιπόρο δεν νομίζω
τόσο πιστό να βρω.
Δεν θέλω αυτούς που φεύγουν πριν το τέλος
ούτε αυτούς που κοιμήθηκαν.
The Foreigner / Ο ξένος

Inland, they were late to accept me.

I was treated, provisionally,
as an island without bridges,
with a permit still pending
for me to create my own populace,
to develop totems, tribes, ancestors,
to exercise the right of place,
to become a homeland.

For reasons of unrest, and for appearances,
they named me a volcano.
Every dry field deserves
the hope of lava.

They want me to burn the old gods,
to eradicate the laws.
I will not be in any danger, they tell me.
I am protected by the water that encircles me.

But they forget that I came for the harvest.
Not every sovereignty must smoulder,
Not every rebellion wants to erupt
into revolution.

Mε δέχτηκαν αργά στην ενδοχώρα.

Με όρους νησιού
χωρίς γέφυρες
με άδεια που εκκρεμεί
για ν’ αναπτύξω τους δικούς μου πληθυσμούς

να ασκήσω το δικαίωμα του τόπου
να γίνω πατρίδα.

Για λόγους ταραχής, και για τις εντυπώσεις,
με είπαν ηφαίστειο.

Θέλουν να κάψω τους παλιούς θεούς

Farewell to Language / Αποχαιρετισμός στη γλώσσα

We depart,
leaving our bodies behind us.

Or the bodies depart first,
leaving behind our traces
if by chance we were carved on stones.

If not, we become
one more language that dies out.

So goodbye whistles
and vibrating clicks and closed sounds,
and a lack of gender and numbers,
the ways we have spoken of colours,
and a word that means: object
of indeterminate shape that just appeared
within the field of vision,
and word that replies: the feel of rain
on new-born skin.

Goodbye to the legend of the shaman’s many children,
where each was punished for the sin of the other-
and to the myths about totem animals
explaining the world with their dewy eyes.

Goodbye women with fingers interlaced
upon their bellies begetting stories,
goodbye independent women with mighty hair,
you whom no one told what to do.

Goodbye gaunt men with inscrutable feelings,
and the invincible power to assemble your people,
goodbye idiosyncratic men,
interpreters of your own oracles,
begetters of future dogmas.

Goodbye intermediaries with hidden intents,
forced to choose one camp
when the war never ends,
leaving you no choice but to shift positions.
You know every protective spell
but have no faith in any of them.

But whatever loses its raft
doesn’t stop existing.
It wanders about
until its means of transport
is invented again.

What ceases to exist doesn’t take along
its shell into non-existence.
It is sent to be beaten in the waves
where, someday, it will form sand beaches.

And when the waters rise,
unexpected vessels appear,
and a language begins
to extend its new extremities,
to shed ambiguous light on the shore.

No one remembers how a language emerges.
No one knows where the words
of lost languages are spoken.

Φεύγουμε
αφήνοντας πίσω μας σώματα.

αν έτυχε να μας σκαλίσουν σε πέτρες.

άλλη μια γλώσσα που σβήνει.

Αντίο λοιπόν σφυρίγματα
και παλλόμενα κλικ και φθόγγοι κλειστοί
και έλλειψη γένους κι αριθμού
και αφθονία ιστορικών χρωμάτων
και λέξη που σημαίνει: «αντικείμενο
απροσδιόριστου σχήματος που μόλις εμφανίστηκε στο όριο του οπτικού πεδίου»
και λέξη που απαντά: «αίσθηση βροχής σε νεογέννητο δέρμα».

Αντίο στον θρύλο των πολλών παιδιών του σαμάνου
που καθένα τιμωρήθηκε για την αμαρτία του άλλου
και στους μύθους για ζώα-προστάτες
που εξηγούσαν τον κόσμο κάθε αυγή με τα μάτια.

Αντίο γυναίκες με πλεγμένα δάχτυλα
πάνω σε κοιλιές που γεννάνε ιστορίες,
αντίο γυναίκες ελεύθερες με ρωμαλέα μαλλιά
που κανείς δεν σας είπε τι να κάνετε.

Αντίο άνδρες λιγνοί με ακατάληπτα αισθήματα
με δύναμη άτρωτη που μαζεύει λαό,
αντίο άντρες ιδιόρρυθμοι
ερμηνευτές των δικών σας χρησμών
ιδρυτές θηλυκών θρησκειών.

Αντίο άνθρωποι ενδιάμεσοι με κρυμμένους σκοπούς
που διαλέγετε αναγκαστικά ένα στρατόπεδο,
αλλά ο πόλεμος δεν τελειώνει ποτέ
κι εσείς συνεχώς αλλάζετε θέση
γνωρίζετε όλα τα ξόρκια
μα δεν εμπιστεύεστε κανένα.

Ό,τι όμως χάνει τη σχεδία του
δεν παύει να υπάρχει.
Περιπλανιέται μέχρι να επινοηθεί ξανά
το σκεύος της μεταφοράς του.

Ό,τι παύει να υπάρχει δεν παίρνει μαζί
το κέλυφός του στην ανυπαρξία.
Το στέλνει να δέρνεται στα κύματα
να σχηματίζει αμμουδιές.

Κι όταν ψηλώσουν τα νερά
παράταιρα εμφανίζονται πλεούμενα
κι αρχίζει μια γλώσσα
να τεντώνει τα καινούρια της άκρα
και να απλώνει το αμφίβολο φως της στην όχθη.

Κανείς δεν θυμάται πώς αρχίζει να λάμπει.
Ούτε ξέρει κανείς πού γυρίζουν οι λέξεις
απ’ τις γλώσσες που χάθηκαν.
Convoy / Νηοπομπή

There is always a ship
in the depth of our contemplations.

One that could take us far away,
one that could bring us peace.

Her complete image is lacking.
Her course is unknown.

Before we are aware of them
the ships of legend
gradually recede from view:

the Argo, the Medousa,
the Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria,
the Paralos[1], the Flying Dutchman,
the Ship of the Forest[2],
Robinson’s raft, the Nautilus,
the Syracusan[3], the Titanic,
Cousteau’s Calypso,
and the Ark, slow and majestic on the water,
fulfilling her double destination.

Not to sink.
To keep going.

[1] A trireme, in Ancient Greece; one of the six ‘sacred ships’ of Athenian Democracy, that participated in sacred or public assignments, usually urgent ones.
[2]A poem by Greek poet Nikos Engonopoulos.
[3] An Ancient Greek ship designed to carry passengers and cargo, which was thought to be the biggest ship of the ancient world. As it was too big for any Mediterranean port, it only sailed once, going from Syracuse to Alexandria, where it remained.

when I lose the ground
under my feet
when my legs are shaking -
the unknown strangers
passing by
will they see me

to call for help
in a bridge language

the small wildflower
whose name I forget
and a handful of pebbles

on dances, on weddings
on festivals

on friends’ houses
on my walks with them
on the big screen of this phone

on the body inside me
on the secrets we share in the night
on the joy of this child, running towards me

In northern countries with round hills
and mist rising from the lakes
I was Greek.

In faraway continents
with canyons and red deserts
I was European.

In the dark alleys of big cities
with frightened footsteps and hurried keys
I was a woman.

And in this small
wild piece of land
where I first saw the colour of water
and of delicate insects
I was a cell
who could not tell apart
flowers from worms and grass
but kept breathing
carrying through this ancient task
on the ground.

Στις βόρειες χώρες με τα στρογγυλά βουνά
με την ομίχλη που ανεβαίνει από τις λίμνες
υπήρξα Ελληνίδα.

Στις μακρινές ηπείρους
με τα φαράγγια και τις κόκκινες ερήμους
υπήρξα Ευρωπαία.

Σε σκοτεινά σοκάκια μητροπόλεων
με τρομαγμένα βήματα και βιαστικά κλειδιά
ήμουν γυναίκα.

Και στο μικρό
το άγριο κομμάτι γης
που είδα το χρώμα του νερού και των λεπτών εντόμων
υπήρξα κύτταρο
που ούτε κοιτούσε ούτε ξεχώριζε

Inmate / Κρατούμενος

When I forget myself and I forget
the prisoner inside my ribcage,
she gets upset and nearly goes mad
she hooks her talons on my breath
she parrots all the promises I’ve made.

She needs me to make a rhythm for her
and when I do, she dances
from rib to rib.
“You keep me in here”, she says, “and I can’ t get out
you owe me
songs and travels and dancing.
You may be free to lose yourself
but I belong to a flock.”

Όταν ξεχνιέμαι και ξεχνώ
τον τρόφιμο του θώρακά μου
ταράζεται και πάει να τρελαθεί
γαντζώνει στην ανάσα μου τα νύχια του
παπαγαλίζει ό,τι έχω υποσχεθεί.

Πρέπει να φτιάχνω έναν ρυθμό
για να χορεύει
