1. HOTEL CENTRAL / HOTEL CENTRAL

   

   

   ENGUKR

   in a city where at an uncertain time

   capricious fate would greet us nicely

   where at night one hears jazz in restaurants

   and in the morning, bells through Gothic arches

   there lilies bloom in canals

   there they have coffee, and then a few beers

   and the bicycles of radiant schoolgirls

   form flocks and then set off on their sweet journeys

    

   their backpacks are bright and light

   their legs so long, their hips so narrow

   oh my lord we too were just like that

   some ten twenty thirty years ago

   but please let go of your homeless melancholy

   in every city there’s a Hotel Central

   for those like you who are known to no one

    

   you can unpack here your modest belongings

   take out your contact lenses 

   wash your flesh get a drink

   press the button of a premium TV channel—

   and then there’s anything you want, and any which way you want

   you close your eyes and enter and take hold

   and nighttime music does not know its limits

   in the cells of your Hotel Central

    

   at three in the morning from the heavenly halls

   God, like Hieronymus Bosch, descends to Hotel Central

   where insects can be seen playing clarinets

   where mosquitoes drink obedient blood

   next to toads and slugs, and also 

   the fish; an all your love is

   like roe in infernal chambers

    

   like the walls smeared with a fight

   between a weak and unhappy slave

   a human—and the venging Spirit

   it sculpts and bends your body

   and then throws it into a vat of slop

   then takes you out of it by two fingers

   shakes you off, looks at you and listens

    

   like the first gaze of tender pity

   like the first touch, like a sad “I love you”

   like a flash of sunlight in the folds of percale—

   Hotel Central greets a new morning

    

   and each day is like the last chance

   and each night is like the last time

   and above the lily-filled canals

   fly the bikes of timid schoolgirls

   у кожнім місті є Готель Централь - 

   для тих хто як і ти ніхто нікому

    

   тут розкладеш нехитрий статок свій

   контактні лінзи витягнеш  з-під вій

   обмиєш плоть дістанеш свій напій

   натиснеш кнопку платного каналу -

   і все що хочеш; і як хочеш теж;

   заплющиш очі ввійдеш і візьмеш

   і музика нічна не знає меж

   у камерах твого Готель-Централю

    

   о третій ночі із небесних заль

   Бог наче Босх зійде в Готель Централь

   з інсектами що грають на кларнетах

   з москітами що п'ють покірну кров

   із жабами і слимаками; знов

   із рибами; і вся твоя любов -

   немов ікра в пекельних кабінетах

    

   немов розмазана по стінах боротьба

   слабкого і нещасного раба

   людини - і караючого Духа

   він твоє тіло ліпить і згина

   а потім кида в повний чан лайна

   а потім двома пальцями вийма

   обтрушує і дивиться і слуха

    

   як перший погляд ніжного жалю

   як перший дотик як сумне «люблю»

   як спалах сонця в згинах перкалю -

   Готель Централь стрічає новий ранок

    

   і кожен день - немов останній шанс

   і кожна ніч - як у останній раз

   і над  лілейними каналами летять

   велосипеди трепетних школярок

2. PHARMACY / АПТЕКА

   

   

   ENGUKR

   You wake up at night—as if a phone just rang,

   as if someone you love is pleading for help:

   flip the hourglass, all the sand is already at the bottom—

   do something, say something

    

   Your heart stands up in the throat, you can’t breathe,

   but all around you is boundless silence, all your loved ones are sleeping.

   Perhaps there is someone else out there, there surely must be.

    

   In the building across the street on the ground floor

   there’s an orange light, the window of a nighttime pharmacy.

   There the druggist on duty tries not to fall asleep:

   drinks black coffee, listens to music, browses the Internet.

   On the cabinet’s glass shelves stand a few pretty jars

   with Latin inscriptions—for example, MORFINI—

   just for beauty’s sake. Since all that’s important

   is stored in drawers big and small and in the fridge:

   syringes, bandages, instruments, pills, and vials.

    

   He or she drinks black coffee, plays computer games,

   or perhaps works on a play, a comedy—why not?

   The computer is on, and the phone on the table

   is ready at any time to shudder and scream:

   no, no, no, no, no

   Серед ночі прокинешся – ніби дзвонив телефон,

   ніби хтось, кого любиш, благає про допомогу:

   переверни годинник, увесь пісок уже унизу,

   зроби що-небудь, скажи що-небудь!

    

   Твоє серце стоїть у горлі і нічим дихати,

   але всюди безмежна тиша, усі твої рідні сплять.

   Може, є ще хто-небудь, напевно є.

    

   У будинку навпроти на першому поверсі –

   помаранчеве світло, вітрина нічної аптеки.

   Там черговий фельдшер намагається не заснути:

   п’є чорну каву, слухає музику, нишпорить в інтернеті.

   На скляних поличках у шафі стоять гарні слоїки

   із латинськими написами, наприклад, MORFINI;

   просто задля краси. Бо ж усе необхідне

   зберігається в ящиках, ящичках і холодильнику:

   шприци, бинти, інструменти, пігулки, ампули.

    

   Він чи вона п’є чорну каву, грає в комп’ютерні ігри,

   або пише п’єсу, комедію, чому б і ні.

   Комп’ютер увімкнений, і телефон на столі

   готовий щомиті здригнутися і закричати:

   ні, ні, ні, ні, ні. 

3. RED TRAIN CAR / ЧЕРВОНИЙ ВАГОН

   

   

   ENGUKR

   don’t be afraid

   this is only a breath only a moment

   this is only a train that hurries

   ahead into the mountains

    

   this is a train

   a lonely game a brief dream

   a train car stopped in the mountains

   a small mistake underlined in red

    

   open up

   no one’s paying attention to you

   each of us has one’s own soul

   one’s own lonely mistakes and deathly limits

    

   this is simply

   going downhill like in a dream

   a red-colored train car

4. CALFSKIN JACKET / КУРТКА ТЕЛЯЧОЇ ШКІРИ

   

   

   ENGUKR

   This happened when empires were in the final stages of rot

   and the last dead fell on the last walls

   and you for the first time made it to the other side of the wall—

   perestroika, a meeting of future leaders,

   how should we reorganize Europe and other blah-blah

   on the green, oh so green grass of European universities.

    

   Stay there if you can, your girlfriend told you;

   don’t come back here, nothing good can happen here

   (ultimately, this is precisely what came true). But you did return:

   in a yellow leather jacket, bought at a flea market in Liverpool

   for the last five pounds, saved from the bus fares and 

   the public toilets—

   thanks to your strong legs and the evening bushes

   with the sharp smell of wild yellow flowers.

    

   You couldn’t not buy it—it was already retro

   it may have been a good twenty years old

   and some guy used to wear it back in the sixties,

   and the worn-out calfskin retained the memories

   of communes and hippies, of beatles and pot.

   In the front pocket a piece of paper survived

   with a phone number—and this sent you off the rails,

   for—in principle—at any time one could call

   and find out what actually happened

   to that guy, to Paul, to John or to George,

   and why was his jacket now for sale

   for five pounds at a Liverpool flea market.

    

   Your girlfriend (and that was me) immediately

   took good note of it—now

   taking turns to wear the jacket was a thing one could do;

    

   there was something so moving in its too-broad shoulders,

   its too-long sleeves,

   and in its scent of a true man,

   when a nice-looking hand of a boy touched

   her tanned flat stomach

   (and she was already pregnant, in her second month),

   and above, next to the clouds, in a yellow submarine

   floated calves—innocent, murdered, mute

   і останні убиті падали на останні мури,

   і ти вперше потрапив по той бік муру -

   Залишайся там, якщо зможеш, - казала тобі твоя дівчина;   

   не вертайся сюди, тут не буде нічого хорошого 

   (так і сталося, врешті).  Але ти повернувся:

   в шкіряній жовтій куртці, купленій на товчку в Ліверпулі

   за останні п'ять фунтів, заощаджених на автобусах  

   і платних вбиральнях -

   дяка сильним ногам і вечірнім кущам

   з гострим запахом дикого жовтого цвіту.

    

   Ти не міг не купити її - вона вже була ретро;

   може їй було навіть усі двадцять років

   і котрийсь старий жук одягав її ще в шістдесяті,

   і в потертій телячій шкірі лишилися спогади

   про комуну і гіпі, про бітлів і маріхуану.

   У нагрудній кишені зберігся клаптик паперу

   з телефонним числом - це вже зовсім тебе доконало,

   бо ж- у принципі - будь-коли можна було задзвонити

   і дізнатися, що ж воно сталося

   з тим жуком, Полом, Джоном чи Джорджем,

   і чому його куртка тепер продається

   за п'ять фунтів на блошинім товчку в Ліверпулі.

    

   Твоя дівчина (а це була я) одразу

   поклала на неї око - адже

   ви могли носити її по черзі;

    

   і було щось зворушливе в зашироких плечах 

   і задовгих рукавах,

   і у запаху справжнього чоловіка,

   коли гарна хлоп'яча рука лягала

   на її засмаглий плаский живіт

   (а вона вже була вагітна, на другому місяці),

   і вгорі поміж хмар у жовтій субмарині

   пропливали  безвинно убиті безмовні телята.

5. COFFEEHOUSE GIRL / ДІВЧИНА З КАВ'ЯРНІ

   

   

   ENGUKR

   saying goodbye—perhaps forever

   most likely forever—

   old lovers

   in an alien city wandered in here

    

   two tables stood under the linden trees

   they sat there silently

   and a girl brought them coffee

   she was incredibly young

    

   her silky close-cropped hair

   a tattoo winding around her elbow

   her knees bare and sad

   she only said “yes” and “no”

    

   and to her snake-like tattoo

   and to simple smile, to each her “yes,”

   and to the final “no” that God prepares for them

   they now drank their coffee like they were drinking wine

6. ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF YOUTH / СТО РОКІВ ЮНОСТІ

   

   

   ENGUKR

   One hundred years of youth, and then all else—a desert.

    

   The neighborhoods of your old city—

   do you not hear them when you close your eyes?

   Through the dead smoke of burning leaves

   the dogs of our childhood run

   and blood grows thick . . . One hundred years

    

   of youth, and then all else—a desert.

   Here nightingales are hammered like spikes

   into the chests of bushes nearly done blooming;

   September’s dried-out rains

   are rinsed in sunlight like the laundry

   that hangs between the windows . . . And the snows!

   Immense and purple . . . But you

    

   you must come closer 

   to the hands, the shoulders, to the skin, the shirt

   scorched by the heat. To the wall

   grown cold from fear and moss.

   Do not you hear when you close your eyes

   your former utter purity?

   Do not you want to penetrate the stone,

   hiding from those first kisses?

    

   . . . There, there—into the stone, the moss,

   into the shattered bricks, into the torn footballs,

   into the nightingales! Into the gentle dogs

   of our childhood that still crawl behind us

   through the dead smoke of burning leaves,

   and blood seeps through the skin on their spines.

   Into the moss! Into the fear!

    

   … and then all else—a desert.

   Тут солов'ї, неначе цвяшки, вбиті

   у груди доквітаючих кущів;

   у вересні просушені дощі

   полощуться на сонці, як білизна,

   розвішена між вікон... А сніги!

   Великі, фіолетові...  Але ти

    

   мусиш ближче підійти

   до рук, плечей, до шкіри, до сорочки,

   гарячої від спеки. До стіни,

   холодної від страху і від моху.

   Хіба не чуєш, затуливши очі,

   свою колишню круглу чистоту?

   Хіба не хочеш увійти у камінь,

   ховаючись від перших поцілунків?

    

   ...Туди, туди - у камінь і у мох,

   у биту цеглу, порвані м'ячі,

   у солов'їв! У лагідних собак

   дитинства нашого, що все повзуть за нами

   крізь мертвий дим палаючого листя,

   аж кров їм проступає на хребтах.

   У мох! У страх!

    

   ... а далі все - пустеля.

7. A GAME OF CHESS / ГРА В ШАХИ

   

   

   ENGUKR

   On a Thursday evening, I think in the fall

   we once sat playing chess in our courtyard

   There was something unclear, like the dreams

   in the summery September air,

    

   when we were playing chess in the courtyard

   on a Thursday evening, I think in the fall

   and a third one, unclear like the dreams

   came up to us in the moonlight.

    

   His arm, bared to the elbow

   messed up our pieces and our thoughts,

   his voice was cold and harsh

   in the summery September air.

    

   And maybe it was just this melancholy wine,

   like an arm bared to the elbow,

   this gray and bare wine of air,

   this wine of life was calling me?

    

   But then—to the unclear dreams,

   to the third one in the moonlight,

   to that voice, cold and harsh—

    

   I have messed up our pieces and our thoughts

   when we were playing chess once in the courtyard

   on a Thursday evening, I think in the fall.

   коли ми грали в шахи на подвір'ї

   в четвер увечері, здається, восени.

8. THE WINE OF ANGELS / ВИНО АНГЕЛІВ

   

   

   ENGUKR

   There is a gentle land where maidens are like crystal

   and children are like steel—unbreakable throughout, 

   where dragon-fighters drink the wine of angels

   in the cold silence of halls, dropping on one knee.

    

   There is a gentle land with dying grass

   where the dragon sings, waiting for centuries,

   Its wise head is bowed, and the edge

   of his mighty wings is embroidered with flowers.

    

   Red is the color of rocks where the monks’ cells are found,

   where in the misery of homes stone chalices burn;

   where the wine of angels is long invisible

   like tears in a river, like our dead souls.

    

   There are no winners here, no losers either;

   here a scorpion naps at the feet of a rhododendron.

   And in the light of the window there is divine darkness

   like letters written on a scorpion’s skin.

   Loves in Kyiv are scarier than the Venetian

   pretty passions. Sinful and light,

   moths fly to the lit candles—

   glittery wings burn on the dead caterpillars!

   Spring has lit the candles of chestnuts!

    

   The tender taste of cheap lipstick,

   the daring innocence of miniskirts,

   these foreheads, shaved incorrectly—

   but it is the image, the memory, the sign that excites . . .

   like the tragic obviousness of a hit song.

    

   You will die here from a bandit’s knife

   and your blood will spread like rust

   in a new Audi in a quiet corner of Tatarka.

   Here you will fly from the balcony, from heaven

   to your own small and dirty private Paris

   in a white blouse of a personal assistant.

    

   You cannot tell marriages from deaths . . .

   Love in Kyiv is scarier than the ideas

   of new communism: drunk, in the dead of night,

   ghosts come out from the Bald Mountain,

   carrying in their arms red banners

   and pots of red geraniums.

    

   You will die here from a bandit’s knife,

   here you will fly from the balcony, from heaven

   in a new Audi in a quiet corner of Tatarka

   to your own small and dirty private Paris

   and your blood will spread like rust

   on a white blouse of a personal assistant.

   нового комунізму: в ночі п'яні

   виходять привиди із Лисої гори,

   несуть в руках червоні прапори

   і горщики червоної герані.

    

   Ти тут помреш від підлого ножа,

   ти тут з балкону, з неба, полетиш -

   в новому «Ауді» із закутків Татарки

   на свій брудний, маленький свій Париж -

   і кров твоя проступить, мов іржа,

   на білій блузці референта-секретарки.

    where beggars crawl from one hand to another

     

    where there’s cigarette fog next to piles of discarded newspapers

    and the puddles of piss freeze at night

                        standing tall

                        a sax player

                        plays no one knows to whom

                        into the blessed darkness

     

    into his golden pipe 

    in a nighttime tube

    he blows the spring

    that was given to him

     

    like a happy sob

    like a lovemaking shout

    like a bittersweet tongue

    like the sorrowful face of an icon

11. SWALLOWS / ЛАСТІВКИ

    the last attempt to fly somewhere

    out of this chicken coop, this stable

    this bedroom where the burning

    beloved smells of an animal nest are thick

     

    there, there—into the well-looked-after skies

    where electric wires are like pedestals

    where there are magical flaps of the rainbow 

    the spastic joys of a poor life

     

    like black gloves off our fingers

    like the black-and-white piano keys

    like the festive nighttime fireworks

    they fly from the family nest

     

    they are already there—invisible like the end-

    less sound of a finite abyss

    so brave they are, so cold

    these lonely takeoffs of our lives

12. KNIFE / НІЖ

    A knife,

            to slice bread

    A knife––to make a reed pipe.

    A knife,

            to finish a lamb

    that a wolf has mauled.

                    This is how

    a naked, dry and Lenten

    surface suddenly foams

    with the sweat of cleaned fish

    in the soup of the day of our Lord.

     

    A sign of mercy and tears.

    Without

            a good omen

    do not touch it:

                this is a knife,

    this is music that kills.

    This is not simply words––

    this is the kind of poetry

                    without

    words

            where the grass washes

    the blade of the sky.

    I will die in Paris on a Thursday evening.

    you forget the lines smells colors and sounds 

    eyesight weakens hearing fades simple joys slip away

    you lift your face and arms after your soul

    but it flies up high impossible to reach

     

    what remains is just the train station the last platform

    the gray foam of parting lathers and swells

    now it washes away my defenseless palms

    and its vile sweet warmth overwhelms my mouth

    love alone remains though one’s better off without it

     

    in a provincial bed I cried until I grew tired

    ruddy lilac peeped with disgust into my window

    the train moved smoothly on the lovers looked inertly

    at the dirty shelf suffocating beneath your body

    a banal train station spring was fading growing quiet

     

    we shall not die in Paris now I know this for sure

    but in a provincial bed that is drenched in sweat and tears

    and no one will serve you your cognac I know

    no one’s kiss will comfort us

    under the Pont Mirabeau the circles of darkness won’t fade

     

    for we cried too bitterly offending mother nature

    we loved too intensely

                    embarrassing our lovers

    we wrote our poems too disrespectfully of other poets

                                    so never

    would they let us die in Paris

                            and the water

    under the Pont Mirabeau they will heavily cordon off

    забуваються лінії запахи барви і звуки

    слабне зір гасне слух і минається радість проста

    за своєю душею простягнеш обличчя і руки

    але високо і недосяжно вона проліта

     

    залишається тільки вокзал на останнім пероні

    сіра піна розлуки клубочиться пухне і от

    вже вона розмиває мої беззахисні долоні

    і огидним солодким теплом наповзає на рот

    залишилась любов але краще б її не було

     

    в провінційній постелі я плакала доки стомилась

    і бридливо рум'яний бузок заглядав до вікна

    поїзд  рівно ішов і закохані мляво дивились

    як під тілом твоїм задихалась полиця брудна

    затихала стихала банальна вокзальна весна

     

    ми помрем не в Парижі тепер я напевно це знаю

    в провінційній постелі що потом кишить і слізьми

    і твого коньяку не подасть тобі жоден я знаю

    нічиїм поцілунком не будемо втішені ми

    під мостом Мірабо не розійдуться кола пітьми

     

    надто гірко ми плакали і ображали природу

    надто сильно любили

                    коханців соромлячи тим

    надто вірші писали поетів зневаживши

                                зроду

    нам вони не дозволять померти в Парижі

                                    і воду

    під мостом Мірабо окільцюють конвоєм густим
