"Asylum Application" is a poignant poem that reflects on the resilience of individuals facing adversity, using the metaphor of an asylum application to explore themes of survival, recognition, belonging, and justice. The poem captures the tension between societal barriers and the human drive to overcome them, highlighting the struggle of marginalized groups seeking refuge in a world that often denies them a voice.
The sea serves as both a perilous obstacle and a potential refuge, symbolizing the broader experience of those fighting for a place in society. Through its nuanced imagery and quiet defiance, the poem emphasizes the transformative power of hope and persistence in reshaping our existence.
This poem is part of the poetry collection Éteron ekarterón (Έτερον εκαρτερών), published by Enýpnio editions (εκδόσεις Ενύπνιο).
Asylum application
After they destroyed the raft,
now you need a plan
Otherwise, it won’t work
I’ll tell you clearly
You can’t stay at the bottom of the sea forever
without papers, a visa, or a residence permit for exceptional reasons
or at least for humanitarian reasons
–call your lawyer–
Only if you brought a tank
or if you stayed bottled up
during July,
Only then, yes, the sea might accept you
as a cadet,
without an organized plan
Maybe,
–I say maybe, huh?–
Maybe she will accept you into her depths.
Maybe she will grant you asylum
–will you call him?–
Have faith,
he will convince her
He will look her right in the algae
–what we say here in slang “in the algaeye”–
and he’ll say with a steady voice
–word and bubble–
"You, my deep Sea,
The crazy ones and the refugees,
but mostly the nameless,
on the surface
are in danger
For these reasons
and with the explicit reservation of all our legal rights
W E C L A I M
That this application for asylum be accepted
That the objection regarding territorial jurisdiction of the earth be
accepted
Because
The refugees and the crazy ones
but mostly the nameless
Are not spirits of the earth
–though they once steamed in her womb–
They don’t know about buoyancy
They only seek the tridents"
I now see you at the heart of a giant bubble
Have faith
I feel it
You will become a wave
