OPPORTUNITY
Poetry and Piety, for a better world
Literature, such as travel, makes visible the connections with certain points, geographical and mental points, memories, destinies and aspirations of people, and this can be of particular importance. We can map the world, establish a certain dimension between time and space, focusing on questions of human nature, past, present and future.
The question is what can be done, why poetry, art, literature, like the act of travelling, the movement of going from one place to another, matters. It's simple: it matters, because it can build in detail a game of mirrors, a network of correspondences between human plans, tragedies, gratitude, dreams. It matters because the expression of the anguishes that are rooted in History are situated in the line of human piety, because there begins the spirit, the beauty.
In a certain way, poetry is inspired by an ethical commitment in which the moral forms of a certain historic era are based, and the gift of hope.
This desire, which inexorably forms the bond that binds us, love, the duty of protection we have for those in Europe who live destroyed and lonely lives, is inseparable from our nature reflected in Art, which we need to endure and live in an empty, pragmatic, negative world.
In this sense, Art, poetry, cinema, music, form a kind of roof that protects us, a house, a home that takes care of contemporary men, women and children without comfort and consolation, advancing through scenarios of material and moral ruin towards a lost place, in a set of poetic images disseminated in the light of a more poignant domain than that of the pernicious law.
To the extent that poetry is communicated through conflicts, which are, by the way, also the spoils of European dilemmas, what happens is that it is inscribed in our personal, collective and historical experience, in our profoundly human existence that is to the surface of the hostile, insidious reality.
From this point of view, poetry has always found relationships and figures that link the wandering of the steps of those who do not have the right direction, and the questions that, for example, nowadays, concern the epics of children and orphans who travel the railway lines of the Balkans and Europe, the islands of Lampedusa and the Aegean, immigrants, the abandoned, exiles in their own country, fathers and mothers who have no face, European refugees confronted with the painful reality of their personal, religious and political journeys, crossing borders but staying in the same place, seeking the compassion that beckons them from distant countries, but enmeshed in the imagination of affection, kindness, poems, in the name of a better world, against the absence of affection.
This feeling is, in truth, identical to the fight that in literature, and in Art, is made against utilitarianism and consumerism. In moments when we are deprived of identity, what resists in the intervals of silence of contemplative and poetic thought that brings us closer to the memory and pain of those who are actually excluded, inhabitants of their inner exile, is kindness, the possibility of a future.
In fact, it is mainly in the images of a redeeming murmur, it is in the sequence of characters and journeys that, page by page, image by image, fight against memory and the loss of identity, in a political-geographical abyss, that lies the construction of a narrative western poetry, seeking compassion.
Through it, the sense of temporality and the horizon of time provide the historical perspective with the question of crossing physical borders and territories subject to permanent travel and exile, to individual and community destiny, from which the artistic work awakens, nostalgically, truly sustaining life, life and the gift of hope, which makes it possible for us to see the words that stand between the wounds of the shock of beauty and inevitable loneliness.
Hence this chain of events, this language of political, personal and collective catastrophe, both in history and in modern democracies, is the proof that makes clear our belonging to a culture in which human loneliness, everything is disastrous and socially vulnerable, irrevocably harbors a hope in the end, which is preserved in pity and love, even if it is nothing more than an obvious chimera.
Thus, Art, especially in cinema and poetry, represents in fact, feeling part of a deep and true unity, which we share with those we love, and which allows, in moments of greatest anguish, reconciliation to be possible, substituting logic for intuition, ultimately expressing true knowledge, on which our moral conduct depends, the hope that lights the wick of our lives together, the flame that warms our restless faces, our failures, which are abandoned in a shattered universe.
An essay about how Art and Poetry should map our contemporary world and give us beauty, hope and an ethical sense.
The project is part of the subtheme Opportunity.

Rui Cóias
Rui Cóias was born in Lisbon. He graduated in Law from the University of Coimbra, has a postgraduate degree in Legal Sciences, he is a Jurist, and also studies Philosophy. He is a poet, essaysit and also translator.
He is the author of the books A Função do Geógrafo e A Ordem do Mundo. His last collection of poems Europa, includes, among others, a series of texts based on the Great War of 1914–1918, written on the occasion of a fellowship awarded by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. This is indeed the theme of his next book, which he is developing in the context of a new scholarship awarded by the Portuguese Ministry of Culture. This book was recently published in Mexico (Las Márgenes Sombrias) and in Holland (Laat de stilte) with translations to Spanish and to Dutch.
Rui Cóias is also published in Belgium, La Nature de la Vie, and in France, L`ordre du monde — this publication, by L`Harmattan Publishing House, had a new improved edition in France in 2019.
He has also written essays. In his work, the distinctions between time and space, between the personal and the impersonal, are imprecise. In the background it is all a vast territory through which travel and travel in space and time establish connections with the landscape and memory, in a project of definition and naming of the intelligible world. Happiness, however uncertain, fleeting, is always within reach, or within our retreat, and we also, at all times, pursue the dark beauty of the world.
He has also published in several anthologies and publications in Portugal and abroad and presented his work in Spain, Macedonia, Switzerland, France, USA, India, Dubai, Serbia, Turkey and represented Portugal in several important festivals and literary meetings.
He is also part of the Portuguese authors that integrate the web platforms: Poetry International Web (Rotterdam), Poems from the Portuguese (Portugal) and Lyricline (Germany). He has a travel and literature blog, and lives in Lisbon.
During this year, an anthology of his poems will be published in Macedonia, translated into Macedonian, and his new book will be published in Portugal.
