The Poets Reading Poets series started out as a humble endeavour during the first phase of the pandemic induced lockdown in India in March 2020, but it soon transcended its limited space and scope. We will wrap up this series with a poem by Vikram Seth, winner of the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Padma Bhushan, and the WH Smith Literary Award among several others, a shining star in the constellation of contemporary Indian poetry in English.

“On the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge,” Vikram Seth, read by Gopal Lahiri. The poem was published in 1990.

Genesis of the Poets Reading Poets series

Indian English poetry has evolved over the years: from the nationalism, Romanticism, and spirituality of early writers like Henry Derozio, Sarojini Naidu, Aurobindo Ghosh, and Toru Dutt to contemporary voices that are constantly seeking to redefine not just the map of Indian poetry but also the meaning of writing in English in India. The Poets Reading Poets series is a conversation. We hope that more poets and readers will join in this discussion and add their voices to the symphony that we have started.
