Without Utensils

by Jure Jakob

Without Utensils

I won’t say anything.

I’ve locked away my tongue and I give you the key.

You can open the door and unpack.

The day’s shapes have become insignificant. The night

No longer sticks to my eyes. In the evening, we go out.

Nobody is swimming. Fish are becoming sleeker,

Swimming in ever bigger circles, rotten nets

Are melding with the sand of the beach, I imagine

Ships beaching before daybreak, silent

As the fine sand turning from your mouth into mine

In an hourglass.

Don’t stand in the wind. You’ll never count

All the lights of this city. The sun has been falling all day

And is now resting, dispersed, on the houses.

Give me your hand. Although we smoke too much, we fill

Our lungs with every breath, and your fingers are golden.

I’m more and more convinced that the world is full

And that there’s still plenty of space left. Tomorrow,

As you wake up, salty and beautiful

With new wishes, and as you come to breakfast,

I won’t say anything either. We’ll eat

Without utensils.

Brez pribora

Ne bom ti govoril.

Jezik sem zaklenil, ključ ti podarim.

Lahko odpreš vrata in razpakiraš.

Oblike dneva so postale nepomembne. Noč se mi

ne lepi več na oči. Zvečer greva ven.

Nihče se ne kopa. Ribe so vedno bolj gladke,

s polnimi pljuči in tvoji prsti so zlati.

Vedno bolj prepričan sem, da je svet poln

in da je v njem še ogromno prostora. Tudi

jutri zjutraj, ko boš vstala, slana in lepa

od novih želja, ter prišla na zajtrk,

ti ne bom govoril. Jedla bova

brez pribora.
