Marius Burokas

Marius Burokas (b. 30 of April, 1977), poet and translator, has studied Lithuanian language and literature at Vilnius University. He has worked as a Lithuanian language teacher, has served as project editor for a public relations agency, has worked in advertising agency and has coordinated literary programs at the Eastern Lithuanian Cultural Centre. Now he is a freelance writer, translator and also writes for weekly culture newspaper Šiaurės Atėnai, does book reviews for “Intelligent Life” magazine and National radio (LRT).
Marius made his debut with the poetry collection Ideograms (Ideogramos) in 1999. His second book of poetry, States of Being (Būsenos), appeared in 2005. His third book – I‘ve Learned Not To Be (Išmokau nebūti) was published in 2011. His third book was awarded “The Young Yotvingian prize” as a best young poet’s book, published in two years. This book was also awarded Antanas Miškinis literary prize.
In 2001 he participated in International Writing Program in Iowa. Marius is a Lithuanian Writers’ Union member since 2007 and the member of Lithuanian Association of Literary Translators since 2012. He lives in Vilnius.

He is a compiler of "Druskininkai Poetic Fall" Anthologies, he is a freelance writer, translator and also writes for weekly culture newspaper Šiaurės Atėnai, does book reviews for "Intelligent Life" magazine and National radio (LRT).
He tells us: I am a poet and translator. Sometimes I write, mostly – on Vilnius – the strangest and mystical city. Poetry is a way to think. It’s a map of Europe, Asia and Lithuania inside.
It is always difficult to choose the right book to read, the book which will fit to you. So Marius is making a big job for readers with his reviews and showing of interesting facts about authors and books. Marius was awarded by "Contemporary Book Smuggler" prize in 2013. This means that he writes and talks about books every day. He is reader and always knows all new books from Lithuania and abroad. He’s making a good literature popular, presents authors and news from literature world to all readers. He has always a book in his pocket. Marius calls himself as a hedonist and this is something what differs him from traditional understanding about poets. "Poetry is interesting to those who are really interested in it. I think those days are gone when poetry was savior and comforter. Poetry is now the poetry as a part of art.
Marius made his debut with the poetry collection Ideograms (Ideogramos) in 1999. "The book "Ideograms" is something different from what we call Marius Burokas poetry. His second book of poetry, States of Being (Būsenos), appeared in 2005. Review by poet Aidas Marčėnas tells us: Love and death are main themes of this Book. Few years ago, after those two books Lithuanian poet and writer Sigitas Parulskis wrote about Marius: "So young and he can write".
His third book – I‘ve Learned Not To Be (Išmokau nebūti) was published in 2011. His third book was awarded “The Young Yotvingian prize” as a best young poet’s book, published in two years. This book was also awarded Antanas Miškinis literary prize. Marius told that a book is very personal. It came from his experience and from his life. The same things were observed by critics - "you can find in this book what life was like, what kind of emptiness opened and how sense of real life came back" (Elena Baliutytė, Knygų Aidai)

He lives in Vilnius with wife and two daughters. Marius translated many books of different writers. We can read Hunter S.Thompson, Charles Bukowski, Allen Ginsberg, Woody Allen, James Ballard, Philip Roth, John Updike because of his translation work.
His poetry also is translated to Russian, Latvian, Slovenian, English, French, German. His poems were published in Anthology "New European Poets". Marius is a member of different Commissions (Book of the Year Campaign, The best translated book).
