The Black Sea

by Ana Brnardić

The Black Sea

At midnight I go blind and turn into a fish

Living deep below the ground

Dreaming of the hum of the black water

Dreaming of a lover jumping out of fire

In an unknown city

Where one walks backward in shoes made of algae

As the black-haired angel gathers pieces of decayed smiles

Covering me up to my chin

My woeful ancestor

The tree that wriggled itself out of the ground

To remind me of something in the night

Crno more

u ponoć oslijepim i pretvorim se u ribu

što živi duboko ispod zemlje

sanjareći o šumu crne vode

o ljubavniku koji iskače iz vatre

u nepoznatu gradu

gdje unatrag se hoda u cipelama od algi

a crnokosi anđeo skuplja raspadnute osmijehe

i pokriva me do brade

moj tužni predak,

stablo koje se istrglo iz zemlje

da bi me u noći posjetilo
