Alexis Bernaut was born in Paris in 1977. He started publishing his poetry in his early thirties, for instance in review Plein Sens, in 2009. He then contributed in editing several anthologies for Éditions Bruno Doucey (Voix Vives 2011 and 2012, and Enfances, regards de poètes), and published his first collection of poetry, Au matin suspendu (Suspended in the morning) in December 2012, just before the supposed end of the world, a hundred years after the death of the Eiffel Tower’s Austrian Icarus, Franz Reichelt – to whom Bernaut pays tribute – 200 years after another Austrian’s failed attempt to fly from the Champ de Mars (Jacob Degen), and the year of the supersonic feat of Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner.

Alexis Bernaut has translated the poetry of US poet Sam Hamill and Trinidadian novelist Earl Lovelace. His own poetry was translated into English, Hebrew, and Korean, and published in reviews in France and abroad (Zone Sensible, Iton 77). He was recently published in the anthology 101 poèmes et quelques contre le racisme (101 poems against racism), at Le Temps des Cerises. In 2016, he was invited by the Seoul International Writers Festival.

Every morning,
I climb the Eiffel Tower stairway
right behind you, François Reichelt, and your odd-looking backpack full of bats and bad omens
and fear, with every step, every morning, o hear
all that metal clang and sing

It is early yet, but each step you take draws you away
from the nascent morning.
As this is the end of sleep, and something will always occur
at the end of sleep, something must occur for newspapers to print stories,
stories of people’s lives and deaths,
people who climb these stairs, people who built these massive metal arches,
who climb these stairs with you, François Reichelt,
At the end of sleep, there is this last step,
the end of silence too, and
The first floor of the Eiffel Tower.

This is a fifty-seven meter fall; now the reel of silence chips off.
You hear friendly voices, and then other insistent
unimportant voices;
photographers, journalists
they’re not responsible
They’re neither guilty
nor accomplices
Ambassadors and scavengers, all of them
just step back and look, sticking to whatever they must
Voices at the end of sleep
And behind you, lo and behold!
All crowded up in a circle, families leaning out of their windows
in the Champ de Mars and worldwide
All of them eager to be the first to read, over your shoulder,
the news in the evening newspaper
where your fate, surely, will be told
Packed and eager arenas
Hyenas
Hungry and restless, they fidget and so trample on the Earth’s balance that,
just like a baby belches
the orbit hiccoughs, and
you fall off.
Those photographers
who shot you as you fell
they must have thought you were as good as dead
when perhaps
you were never so alive
Borne of four cold metal thighs
falling in the heart of fear
Your heart stopped at the edge of the morning.
Tous les matins,

ce chant que psalmodie le métal.

qui point, car c’est le bout du sommeil
et c’est au bout du sommeil qu’il faut toujours
qu’il arrive
quelque chose à imprimer,
quelque chose de la vie des gens
qui montent, frères, à tes côtés
qui montent avec
les arceaux de la tour, ses énormes structures
boulonnées,
avec toi, chaque matin, François Reichelt,

tout au bout du sommeil, des marches,

du silence.

Le premier étage de la tour Eiffel.

Cinquante-sept mètres de vide, la pellicule
de silence s’écaille.
Voix amies et d’autres voix, pressantes, anecdotiques
des photographes, des journalistes, ni
responsables ni coupables ni complices,
ambassadeurs ou charognards ils restent à l’écart

Au bout du silence ces voix.

Et derrière toi, je les vois
en cercle, à leurs fenêtres massés en famille
leurs yeux fourmillent
du Champ-de-Mars et d’ailleurs bavant voyeurs
penchés pour lire avant les autres
par-dessus ton épaule
la rubrique des faits divers dans le journal du soir

où ton destin peut-être paraîtra

Pleine, avide arène, hyènes

Penchées qui trépignent impatientes et pèsent
tant et si bien sur l’équilibre de la Terre
que,

comme rote un nouveau-né,
l’orbite hoquette
et tu tombes

et si ceux qui te photographient alors
croient saisir l’image d’un homme déjà mort
dans cette chute, dans cet énorme effroi,
peut-être n’as-tu jamais autant vécu
accouché de quatre cuisses de froid

au cœur de cet effroi

ton cœur s’est arrêté tout au bord du matin.

Like Li Bai in the Blue river you long to catch the moon’s reflection
and drink the reflection of both moons
until you have made them one

Eliza – she’s wearing this midnight blue
V-necked sweater
in as Victory, envy,
as in divesting her of her V-necked sweater
as in delving
In the abyss of this letter
at the bottom of this gorge runs a river you know
That river you let run, night after night
between the impetus and the moon
your desires and Eliza,
to give your desires an excuse ,
I suppose –
this river, they couldn’t cross it.
The moon tonight is full –just like you are
But this evening has grown weary of you
its hospitality – it stops right here
on the banks of the name Amur

Eliza the moon shines on her and shines no further
Your hands
a river a word
and a bar-room table set them
apart from her
breasts

This is the river of your drowned desire
It’s neither the Blue River, nor the River Amur
And a neon light, not the moon
reflects itself into it

pour l’avoir toi-même fait couler, soir après soir
entre l’élan et la lune
tes désirs et Éliza
pour leur donner excuse, sans doute :
ce fleuve, ils ne pouvaient le franchir
La lune ce soir s’y reflète pleine
(ou est-ce toi-même, encore gorgé ?)

Mais ce soir pour de bon s’est lassé de toi
son hospitalité s’arrête ici
à la rive de l’Amour

Éliza la lune l’éclaire et rien au-delà d’elle

Tes mains
Un fleuve un mot
la table d’un
café les séparent de
ses seins

Ce fleuve-là, celui de tes désirs noyés
n’est pas le Fleuve Bleu, n’est pas le fleuve Amour

Et c’est un néon, pas la lune

To Sam Hamill, on his 74th birthday
We’re drunk again tonight
and I think of us in France
in Dordogne at sunset
We’re drinking red wine by the river
I mention Augiéras, whom you’ve never heard of
I think of us again, this time in Brittany
where I’m beginning a new life, where you won’t come visit
It is sunset again, on the beach at Montsarrac
and barnacle geese call
from behind the horizon
And I think again, as we’re drinking too much
of all those places where we will not be together
because your health
will not allow it
because reality
will not have it that way
I think of us as kids in the darkness
who imagine worlds and tell each other stories
to stay awake
borne on the edge of the world
on the feathers
of their whispers
As they promise each other
never to grow old.

I was surprised to see you show up
without an escort of armed men
with just your niece
and your grandniece
to the awards presentation
The topic was "The hand"
We had dedicated our poems
to our late fathers
After dinner we took a walk
in the old city of Vannes
my girlfriend, and me, and you
and your niece
and your grandniece
Never had a prisoner
been authorized you said
to come claim a poetry prize
without an escort
You were due to be back
at the Annoeullin jail
at 3PM sharp on the following day
It mattered
you said
not just for your own case
but for all
detained poets to come
Walking you back
to your niece’s car, you
your niece
and your grandniece
we left the old town
through the Porte Prison fortified gate
When we took notice
my girlfriend and I
were somewhat embarrassed
But then it made you laugh
and your laughter
set us free.

Nous vous avons raccompagnés
à la voiture de ta nièce, toi

en sortant de la vieille ville
par la Porte Prison
Quand nous nous en sommes rendus compte
ma compagne et moi
étions un peu gênés
Mais toi, ça t’a fait rire
et ton rire
nous a libérés.

Poetry kills poets
and life eats all the living
One should be able to sing
the limpness
the morbidity
the mediocrity
Sing the tepidness in which
very young children are sometimes
quite successfully brought up
to a life of no noise
One should be able to sing
the trouble one goes to
so that they won’t whet life’s appetite
so that they won’t make too much noise
when they die in their beds
One should be able to make poetry
out of what kills poetry.

There are simply
too many of us, poets
humans, on this planet
Too many who talk
too many who keep quiet, too scarce the calm
before the word and yet

Each time you reach orgasm
a thunderstorm breaks out
somewhere around the world
And I would like to have you come
where the earth
needs water

Chaque fois que tu atteins l’orgasme
