The Chasm of Hesitation

by Niillas Holmberg

The Chasm of Hesitation

I spoiled myself with pride

born as I was with skis
I killed my mother in childbirth

speed made me what I am
a canny trapper

once I went out into the night

planning to outwit my enemies

and I came across an arctic fox

with a bird in its mouth

a brown willow grouse in midwinter

she dropped it and said
this fool of a bird believed
the summer would last forever

if it refused to change its colour

as I sat there thinking whether I

should sacrifice my life

for my art
or my art for my life

that thief stole my skis

Eahpádusa gorsa

Nuoskkidin iežan dakkár jáhkuin

aht’ eadni jámii riegádahttimii

bohten oainnat sabetjulggiid
ja mus dan fártta

háhppilamos gárddiid oahppi

oktii čuoigalin ijagihtii

spiriid speadjat
ja ovddal bođii njálla

geaktaráiggis loddi

rievssat geassegávttiinis

dálveguovdilis

njealjejuolggat láhttestii
ahte rievssat navddii liehmu bistit

jos son biehttalivččii
luohpat geassedolggiin

mievžžastin árvvoštallat

oaffarušango ealliman dáidagii

vai dáidagan eallim –
ja iigoson njálla
suoládan mu sabehiid
