Ulay wins lawsuit against Marina Abramović

The lawsuit against Abramović was launched nearly a year ago. On Wednesday a Dutch Court ordered Abramović to pay Ulay more than a quarter million euros arising from the sales of joint works and a commercial re-enactment for Adidas of a joint piece.

As the Guardian reports, »Ulay launched a lawsuit last year in which he claimed that Abramović has violated a contract they signed in 1999 covering works they had created together. He clamed that Abramović has asked galleries to list her as the sole author of their joint works, contrary to the terms of the contract, failed to provide him with accurate statements of sales, and had paid him only four times in the course of 16 years«. Additionaly »in its ruling, the court in Amsterdam found that Ulay was entitled to royalties of 20 percent net on the sales of their works, a large sum than before, and ordered Abramović to back-dated royalties of more than €250,000 as well as more than €23,000 in legal costs«.

Yesterday, Ulay described the legal dispute as “unpleasant and distressful”. To him this battle resembled his battle with cancer.

There was no immediate public comment on Wednesday from Abramović.
